What is an PDF417 Barcode?

Date November 15, 2010 Author AM Labels

Created by Symbol technologies in 1991 the PDF417 is a two dimensional (2D) stacked barcode symbology capable of encoding over a kilobyte of data. This enables the PDF417 to have 100 times the information capacity of a traditional linear barcode of the same size per label. The PDF417 is commonly used in mailing, logistics and inventory management systems.

PDF417 BarcodeThe PDF417 which stands for Portable Data File is one of the most popular 2D codes due to its ability to store large amounts of text and data securely and inexpensively and also because they can be easily read with slightly modified handheld laser or linear CCD scanners. It also includes an Error Correction Code (ECC) which allows error-free reading even when a symbol has been partially lost or destroyed.

Creating PDF417 barcodes with software

PDF417 barcodes can be generated through barcode label software which will also allow you to produce a design for your labels. Barcode software is typically available in basic, professional and networked versions; limited software is often supplied with the printer which will allow basic designs to be created. If you are creating your PDF417 barcodes from a database then you will need professional barcode software.
